Mai Houa's Classroom Site
Welcome to Room 214's classroom site.

Our classroom is a community of fourth, fifth and sixth graders who work hard to create a classroom that supports the academic progress, social development, and safety of each member.  We strive for a peaceful classroom.

Each school day includes Writer's Workshop, Cultural Studies, Mathematics, Specialty Classes (Physical Education, Music, Science) and Reader's Workshop.  Our class is fortunate have ELL teacher, Julie Landswerk, and Literacy teacher, Jodi Zinnell, working in our classroom during Reader's Workshop.  This collaboration makes it possible to meet with all the students in very small groups on a regular basis, as well as frequent one-on-one reading conferences.  The groupings provide emphasis for all learners at their appropriate level.  This is the perfect setting to provide extra practice for those who need it and extensions for the GT students.

The Cultural Studies focus this year is Ancient Civilizations.  This theme is integrated into much of the reading curriculum and writing curriculum. Extending the Cultural Studies are field trips to the Pompeii Exhibit at the Science Museum of MN and MN Art Institute.  We will be viewing arts from Rome, Greece, China, India, and Native America.
