Welcome to Room 216!
Room 216 is a multi-age classroom with grades 4, 5, and 6.

In Cultures this year, each grade level will be studying a different part of history. Fourth graders will be studying prehistoric life, early humans, and the earth's systems. Fifth graders will be learning about ancient civilizations, beginning with ancient Mesopotamia. Sixth graders will be finishing U.S. history- colonial times and formation of our government- and Minnesota history.

We will also be working on developing each student's writing abilities. We use a writer's notebook to record our ideas and create drafts of stories and reports. Fourth graders will begin with paragraph writing and note taking skills. Fifth graders have already begun their study of poetry. Sixth graders will be writing essays this year. They have begun with a review of paragraph writing. We also will be doing word study and grammar.

Students have the opportunity to use all of the beautiful Montessori materials in their mathematical studies. Fourth graders will be studying a variety of topics, including multiples, fractions, multiplication, and division. Fifth graders will be working on fractions, decimals, integers, and area.  Sixth graders will be learning about surface area, volume, binomials, trinomials, and cubing.

In Reader's Workshop, we will be studying a variety of authors and genres of literature. We keep a reader's notebook to reflect on our reading. We will be learning about the reading strategies of predicting, questioning, clarifying, and summarizing, and are applying them to the texts that we read.
