|  | | | | Room 108 Times September 21,2007 | | Library: Next week the library will be open and we will be visiting our school library on Friday. The students will be checking out a two library books. Each student is welcome to keep the books for up to two weeks to read. They may return them earlier than Friday if they like. However, we only go to the library on Friday and they can only have two books out at a time from the library. Thanks for helping remind y our child to bring their books back by Friday to check out books.
Scholastic Book Orders: The books have been ordered and the orders take approximately two weeks to be delivered. I will send them home as soon as they arrive.
Early Release: Our first early release day is on October 3. This is the day that the students school day is over at 1:40 pm. This means if you are picking up your child their school day is over at 1:40 pm and you can pick them up then. If your child is walking or riding the bus they will be leaving school at 1:40. You would expect them to be home about 2 hours earlier that day.
Parent Orientation: I am looking forward to meeting with the parents and sharing with them about their child’s school day on that evening. The Parent orientation begins at 5:30. The E1 (1st, 2nd,3rd grade) teachers will have two presentations in their classrooms from 5:30-6:00 and 6:00 -6:30pm. I will share information about our classroom, homework and other school information that evening.
Fall B-B-Q: The first fall B-B-Q is on October 3rd and this year our lunch time is 12:00 and recess will follow. If you are able to make it please complete the notice from the cafeteria this was sent home in the Friday folder the other week. If you do not have the form send a note to let them know to assist them in ordering enough food. Thanks.
Volunteers: I am still looking forward to having a few parents volunteer this year. If you are able to come in for an hour an listen to students read once a week or a few times a month that would be greatly appreciated. I will also be looking for volunteers for field trips throughout the year and I will let you know on the permission slip at that time.
Birthdays: Please feel free to contact me as it gets closer to your child’s birthday if I have not contacted you. We have just recently celebrated three birthdays this week! During the celebration students have shared what they like to do on their birthday or what they have recently done or are planning on doing. You are free to bring in photos or just share. In addition to that, the students have brought in a treat to share with the class. This year we have 25 students this year and I will let you know if that changes throughout the year. The treats must be store bought for us to be able to share them at school. Also if your child has a birthday over a break in the school year we will plan a day that works and if your child has a summer birthday we can celebrate their half birthday or at the end of the year. I have left this up the the families to decide with their child.
PTA Fall Festival: The PTA is having a fall festival on October 5th from 5-7pm. This fun event will have games, food, and the fun bouncers to jump in. Please remember all children attending must be supervised by parent/guardian during the event.
Share Calendar: I have a share calendar below that has two student’s names on each day. They will be helping to run our class meeting and sharing on that day. I would ask that our share this year be similar to last years. Please help your child select some thing to share on their day that is educationally related and school appropriate. Please do not send Game Boy, Walkman, Pokemon cards or similar items that are not allowed at school. If you have a question about your item please send a note prior to your child’s day. I am also happy to make arrangements if you are bringing the share in, but I ask that you do this in advance. I also look at this as a responsibility of your child to be organized on their day. If they forget on their day they will still help run the meeting and are welcome to share a story, but we are not making it up. The share schedule is alphabetical and about every two weeks each child shares.

Homework:
All students: I will be sending home homework on Tuesday and asking that it be returned on the following Monday. This home work will consist of some math, reading and writing, phonic skills, word wall words and some other types of worksheets. The cover of this notebook will outline some of the types of homework and the expectations. I will also be sharing this with you at the open house next week.
Reading homework for 1st and 2nd grade This will be done a little differently. You should expect this to come home Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday and I will keep the book bags on Friday to change the books so we can start this over the next week. I also have direction for this on the cover of the folder.
Writing Homework (2nd grade only) : The 2nd grade students will also be receiving a writing assignment. This will be sent home on Tuesday and returned on the following Monday with their other homework. I will also have the directions on the front cover of the writing folder.
