Betsy's Classroom
Welcome to our Classroom site.
My name is Betsy Miller and room 107 is my classroom.

This year (2009-2010) my classroom is made up of 2nd (15) and 3rd (12) graders, what a wonderful class it is!    As each child enters our classroom as 1st graders, they will  stay with me for three years.  Next year my classroom will consist of 1st graders and 3rd graders.  The following year will be 1st and 2nd graders, then the rotation starts again.

This is my 17th year at Nokomis Montessori and my 22th year teaching. .  I received my B.A. in Elementary Education from the University of Minnesota, my Montessori Certification from St. Catherine's College and my Masters Degree in Education from Hamline University.

Reading Workshop:
To help differentiate the learning instruction I have many other teachers who come in during this time to help with guided reading groups.  Dan (literacy teacher) works with the 3rd graders with  guided reading groups.  I work with the second and third graders in guided reading groups and  Leona, our ELL teacher, works with 2nd grade guided reading groups.  We start with a short lesson and then the children are either quietly working or in a small guided reading group.  During their work time, children are reading and writing about their reading.  Our goal is to build capacity, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension.

Writing Workshop:
During this hour I give a short mini-lesson (this could be a story, a specific technique, or subject).  The children have about 30 min. of writing time to try   these techniques, record their own stories and share their oral and written stories with the class.  We frequently have a quick share at the end of most days.  The children Love writing each day!

Mathematics:
We use Montessori math materials to teach operations and geometry.  Note the pictures of materials at the bottom of the page.  Click on them and it tells the name and what each is used for.
For measurement, money, time and pattern work I use a variety of materials.  I also teach problem solving each week, throughout the year.

Culture:
This year is culture we will be focusing on Earth Science, Solar System and Invertebrates.

Contact:

The best time to contact  me is before or after school 293-8857.  I do check email during the day and this will be a very quick way to ask me questions and notify me.  Please try not to call me during teaching time.  Too many calls become distracting.
